Chiropody

At Unity Health, we provide chiropody services at all three of our sites:

  • St. Joseph’s Health Centre chiropodists focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute disorders of the foot to patients at a high-risk for ulcerations, infections and amputations.
  • St. Michael’s Hospital chiropodists work in various practice areas and clinical sites including the Diabetes Comprehensive Care Program (DCCP) Chiropody Clinic and the Sumac Creek Family Health Team Chiropody Clinic.
  • Providence Hospital chiropodists provide on-site assessment, treatment and prevention of diseases or disorders of the foot by therapeutic, surgical, orthotic or palliative means. This includes treatment of common problems like corns, calluses, plantar warts, fungal or infected nails, ingrown or thickened toenails, athlete’s foot, heel pain, and diabetic or chronic non-healing ulcers.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre chiropodists focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute disorders of the foot to patients at a high-risk for ulcerations, infections and amputations.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre has made changes to the referral criteria for our chiropody services so we can better meet the needs of patients with acute high-risk foot disease.

Clinics & Services

The clinic provides quality foot care assessment and treatment including arthritic joints, Morton’s neuroma, bunions, plantar fasciitis, calcaneous spurs and foot ulcers. Our pedorthist specializes in modifying footwear and supportive devices, fitting and modifying foot appliances and footwear and in alleviating painful or debilitating conditions of the lower limb and accommodation of foot deformities.

Chiropody at St. Michael's Hospital

The St. Michael’s Hospital chiropodists work in various practice areas and clinical sites as described below. The referral information for each service is described within the corresponding section.

The wound care chiropodists are key members of multidisciplinary teams, clinics and units within the hospital, including:

  • the interprofessional wound care team
  • inpatient care units
  • outpatient clinics (chiropody, vascular, plastics, orthopedics and infectious disease clinics)
  • the hemodialysis unit,
  • and the emergency department.

They work exclusively in the treatment and prevention of foot ulcers (wounds).

Chiropodists on the wound care team at St. Michael’s Hospital provide education for staff, external health care practitioners, students and medical residents. The chiropody wound care program is also a clinical education site for chiropody students attending the Michener Institute in Toronto, medical students and residents from The University of Toronto, as well as wound healing master’s program students from Western University in London. The education provided is unique and team-based.

Our chiropodists are highly engaged in complex clinical care, education and research. They present research at the international level and educate health care practitioners about foot ulcer treatment and prevention.

Referral information

For foot ulcer management, a St. Michael’s doctor’s referral is required. Please complete our referral form and fax to 416-864-5612.

Once accepted to St. Michael’s Hospital Foot Ulcer Treatment and Assessment Clinic, you will be assessed and treated by our chiropody wound care team. As part of your ulcer management, the chiropodists will assess and treat your foot ulcers and suggest further diagnostic examinations, local wound dressings and specialized devices to take pressure away from the foot ulcer to allow it to heal.

Once accepted to St. Michael’s Hospital Foot Ulcer Treatment and Assessment Clinic, you will be assessed and treated by our chiropody wound care team. As part of your ulcer management, the chiropodists will assess and treat your foot ulcers and suggest further diagnostic examinations, local wound dressings and specialized devices to take pressure away from the foot ulcer to allow it to heal.

As a member of the St. Michael’s Hospital Academic Family Health Team’s (SMHAFHT) interprofessional health care team, the chiropodist provides a full range of primary foot care to all SMHAFHT patients. The range of service includes management of acute & chronic pathological foot conditions, surgical procedures, and preventive and palliative foot care.

An emphasis is placed on the promotion of foot health, working alongside the diabetes education program. Patients will be encouraged to participate at all times, within their capabilities to accept the utmost responsibility for their own care.

Referral information

Patients eligible to see the chiropodist at SMHAFHT are required to be rostered patients of physicians at SMHAFHT, and are referred directly by their physician.

Clinics & Services

The services that we provide at St. Michael’s Endocrinology division include:

  • Nail care for high risk diabetic patients
  • Callus and corn management for high risk diabetic patient
  • Ulcer without systemic infection
  • Education about general foot care

The DCCP Chiropody Clinic is also a clinical education site for chiropody students attending the Michener Institute in Toronto. The education provided is unique and focuses on diabetic complications assessment, treatment and prevention. The chiropodist at St. Michael’s Hospital Endocrinology Division provides education for nurses, dieticians, endocrinologists, students and medical residents.
