Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose and Throat)

Ear, Nose, Throat and Voice (Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery) programs at Unity Health comprise a wide range of clinics. Our highly trained doctors specialize in disorders of the ears, nose, speech and swallowing disorders, and offer many services including hearing assessments, digital voice analysis and therapeutic treatments.

Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose and Throat) at St. Joseph's Health Centre

The clinic is run by an otolaryngologist, a physician specializing in the assessment and treatment of disorders of ears (hearing and balance) the nose (nasal and sinus diseases) and the pharynx (throat). Patients with concerns in any of these areas are thoroughly assessed and any required diagnostic testing and follow-up and treatment is arranged.

Audiologists are regulated hearing care professionals. Audiologists determine hearing loss type, severity and the need for hearing aids and assistive listening devices.

If interested in purchasing hearing aids at St. Michael’s, a hearing aid evaluation appointment ($95) is required. During this appointment, the audiologist determines the most appropriate type and level of technology and provides you with a hearing aid prescription. If interested in filling your prescription, the hearing aids can be ordered through our department and fit accordingly to your hearing loss.

The government does subsidize hearing aids through the Assistive Devices Program, or ADP. Ontario residents qualify for the ADP grant every five years.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work with patients who have swallowing and communication disorders. They see patients in the hospital and also in our swallowing and voice clinic.

Inpatient Services

A team of speech-language pathologists provides both clinical and instrumental evaluations and management of oropharygneal swallowing disorders, caused by things such as stroke or trauma, or from other causes such as tracheostomy or when taken off a breathing tube.

Outpatient Services

The Voice Clinic provides state-of-the-art voice care, offering services such as stroboscopy, digital voice analysis and therapeutic treatment. The Swallowing Clinic (Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Clinic) runs one day a week and offers swallowing studies to St. Michael’s patients.

Education and Research

Our Speech-Language Pathology service is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. We actively engage in staff and student teaching, quality improvement, continuing education and research projects.
