Bariatric Centre of Excellence

Bariatric surgery, in combination with a healthy diet and exercise, is a treatment option for improving obesity and obesity-related diseases. It involves making changes to the digestive system to assist in the management of weight and ultimately improve health and well-being.

To help more people access bariatric surgical care, the Ontario Bariatric Network (OBN) has 12 designated Bariatric Centres in Ontario that offer comprehensive pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative care. In partnership with Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), Unity Health Toronto has opened the Bariatric Centre of Excellence to provide our communities access to bariatric surgical care close to home.

Our Centre includes an assessment site at Providence Healthcare and three bariatric surgery sites at St. Michael’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and MGH.

Referrals

  • You will need a referral from your doctor to access our Centre. Your physician must register and submit your referral through the OBN’s online referral system.
  • While the OBN assigns each patient to one of its local centres based on geography, your physician will have the option of noting a preference for our Centre in the ‘additional comments’ section during the referral process.
  • Once we receive your referral, your candidacy for the program will be determined by an interdisciplinary team of bariatric experts
