Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults in Canada, accounting for over 81 per cent of all injury-related hospitalizations. Fall-related injuries can significantly impact quality of life and increase a person’s need for caregiving supports. Falls can also lead to an earlier need for long-term care, which may run against a person’s wishes to age in place.

Providence Healthcare’s Falls Prevention Clinic has been operating since 2014 and typically sees around five thousand clients each year. The clinic helps people to maximize their function and safety while living in the community through occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work, as well a review of medications from a certified geriatric pharmacist.

“Our small but mighty team is focused on providing holistic care in a client-centred way,” says Chiara Campitelli-Thompson, Patient Care Manager of Providence’s outpatient specialized geriatric services. “Through regular messages of thanks and gratitude, I have had the pleasure of hearing how the expertise, knowledge and support that the clinic team provides has made a significant impact in the lives of our clients.”

While people of all ages who are at risk of falls can be referred to the clinic, most clients are over the age of 65. As the proportion of older adults in Canada is projected to grow at an accelerated pace over the next decade, the clinic serves an important need. Equipping older adults at risk of falls with supports can help them lead healthier lives with more independence.

To learn more about the clinic from a patient’s point of view, we spoke to John Crisp, who was referred to the clinic after a hospital stay. He completed eight weeks of therapy and lives at home with his wife.

What have you learned at the Falls Prevention Clinic that will help you in your daily life?

I think the sense of confidence is very important. Having been at the clinic, my confidence in myself and my ability to do things has increased. Up until then, I was hesitant to do anything – out of worry of overdoing something or hurting myself. After my time at the clinic I gained confidence and I believe in my abilities now.

How have the staff at the clinic supported you?

The team was exceedingly good. They were patient, kind, supportive and also demanding. They meant business and that’s great. It’s exactly what I needed to push myself to get stronger.

What would you tell someone else who has experienced a fall and is referred to the Falls Prevention Clinic about what they can expect?

I would tell them they can expect support but you really have to participate. The more you put into going, the better you will be as a result of the effort you put forward. You’ll end up looking forward to going each week and you need to continue doing the exercises they give you. It was so stimulating and such a positive experience.
