As a national leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics, Unity Health Toronto is helping shape the future of healthcare innovation in Canada. In collaboration with KPMG Canada, Unity Health Toronto has created the Health AI Academy, a national training initiative designed to equip healthcare professionals and leaders with the knowledge, skills and confidence to harness AI responsibly and effectively.
The Health AI Academy is returning for a second cohort in Fall 2026 to continue building AI literacy and leadership capabilities across the health system.
Registration for the Fall 2026 cohort is now closed. We have received more than 1000 applications from across Canada. Applicants can expect to hear from us about the status of their application in August.

The Health AI Academy features two innovative learning components, beginning with Health AI Foundations.
Health AI Foundations
A virtual, interactive course delivered over eight live online modules every Wednesday from September 16 to November 4, 2026. Module 1 will take place on Sept.16 from 5 to 6:45 p.m. EST. All subsequent modules will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. EST.
The 8 session topics for the Health AI Foundations course include:
- AI Strategy & Use Case Prioritization
- Data Governance: Responsible Management Of Health Data
- AI Governance, Ethics, & Portfolio Management
- AI Models & Evaluation in Healthcare
- Agentic AI in Healthcare
- Implementation, Change Management, and Value Realization
- AI Solution Procurement and Vendor Selection
- HAIA Demo Day
By the end of Health AI Foundations, participants will be able to:
- Develop a strategic and critical understanding of AI principles and their applications in clinical practice and health system operations
- Develop a deep understanding of the ethical, privacy and data governance challenges associated with AI in healthcare, and learn strategies to support responsible adoption and implementation through robust, regulation-compliant frameworks
- Effectively integrate AI tools into clinical workflows and existing health IT systems to enhance patient care and health outcomes
- Evaluate and prioritize AI applications for implementation based on organizational goals, operational efficiency, and resource constraints
- Gain the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about AI investments and partnerships, grounded in a clear understanding of AI capabilities, limitations and relevance within the healthcare context
Health AI Fellowship
An immersive, in-person program hosted in Toronto, designed for an interdisciplinary subset of Foundations course participants seeking deeper practical exposure.

Who is eligible to participate in The Health AI Academy?
The Academy is for individuals employed in the Canadian public healthcare sector who aspire to implement AI solutions within their institutions. The Health AI Academy is designed for three types of participants:
- Health leaders: Senior executives and decision-makers who would be responsible for strategic planning and AI integration across health organizations.
- Clinicians: Physicians, nurses and allied health professionals who would interact with AI technologies in diagnostics, patient care and clinical decision-making.
- Operational staff: Information Technology (IT) specialists, data analysts, privacy and legal teams and administrative staff who would be responsible for supporting AI implementation, data management and system operations within health settings.
What are the dates and times for the Health AI Foundations online course
The Health AI Foundations online course will take place from September 16 to November 4, 2026, on Wednesdays. Module 1 will take place on Sept.16 from 5 to 6:45 p.m. EST. All subsequent modules will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. EST.
Will there be group work, or is this course completed independently?
Individual and group applications are welcome.
For group applications, up to seven participants representing a mix of roles such as executives, clinicians, operational staff (including data, clinical, IT, etc.) are encouraged. Groups will be able to collaboratively complete the course assignments, which have questions that benefit from a diversity of perspectives. Please note that for group applications, each team member must individually complete the online application form.
Is there a cost associated with registering for and participating in the program?
We are pleased to offer complimentary registration for individuals employed in the Canadian public healthcare sector who aspire to implement AI solutions within their institutions. What materials and documents do I need for the program?
The Health AI Academy will provide all required reading and learning materials. Learners will only need a laptop or PC with a secure internet connection to access the course.
How will my participation in the online be graded?
Your participation in the online course will be assessed through multiple indicators throughout the course. The primary assessment will be the creation of an AI and Data Transformation Roadmap, tailored to your institution. This can be completed collaboratively as a group, or individually. Additionally, there will be knowledge check quizzes at the end of every module and course attendance will be monitored.
What is the time commitment for the program?
Acknowledging that learning styles vary, we estimate that it will take approximately 3 hours per week to complete the online course.
Can I sign up for both the Health AI Foundations program and the Health AI Fellowship program? Are there separate registration programs for each?
The Health AI Fellowship program is intended for an interdisciplinary group of 20 participants seeking deeper practical exposure after completing the Health AI Foundations program.
