Indigenous Wellness, Reconciliation and Partnerships at Unity Health Toronto Logo Contest

Introduction:

The Office of Indigenous Wellness, Reconciliation and Partnerships (OIWRP) at Unity Health Toronto is committed to offering culturally safe care and support to First Nations, Inuit and Metis people and their families. As a new office, we are seeking a talented Indigenous Artist to create a logo that encapsulates our values, beliefs, and aspirations! We envision a logo that represents Indigenous health and well-being, incorporates First Nations, Inuit and Metis identities, and embodies the essence of wellness, reconciliation, and partnership. We want to see the positive future of FNIM health from your eyes.

Objective:

Design a logo for the OIWRP to be featured on our upcoming website, media, resources, and materials.

Eligibility:

Submissions are open to individuals above the age of 18 who identify as First Nations, Metis or Inuit. Please provide a description about your identity and which Indigenous communit(ies) you have a relationship with. 

Submission Process:

Required:

  1. Submit your logo to Indigadmin@unityhealth.to with the subject heading, “Logo Submission_Last name, First Initial.” (In a colour and a black and white alternative as high resolution PNG files).
  2. Include your name, age, and contact information in the email. Please provide a description about your identity and which Indigenous communit(ies) you have a relationship with. 
  3. In 150-200 words, provide a brief description of your design and the choices you made (i.e. colours, shapes, design process, thoughts, or teachings etc.).
  4. In 150-200 words, how does your message or story in this logo convey your perspectives and feelings about Indigenous health, wellness or reconciliation?
  5. In 150-200 words, describe how your design shows Indigenous healing practices, ceremonies, and services working alongside Western medicine in a hospital setting to provide the highest level of care to our community members?

  • Tell us about how your personal or professional background has prepared you to design this logo.
  • Were there particular health or community-related values that influenced your design?
  • How do your personal values and beliefs influence the cultural, geographic, historical, and environmental elements you drew upon?
  • How do you see this logo as connecting community within and outside the hospital?

Design Guidelines:

  1. The design must be original artwork conceived and produced by you.
  2. Use solid colours, no shading or gradients. Avoid hand drawings with fine detail.
  3. The design must be free from copyrighted or otherwise infringing material.
  4. The design must have a black and white alternative.
  5. The design could:
    1. Attempt to create a design that is highly visible and identifiable to all three Indigenous identity groups.
    2. Include colours aligned with the Unity Health Toronto brand palette (click/tap image below to expand).

  1. Ensure scalability and versatility for application across various media, including print, digital, and social media platforms.

Submission Guidelines:

  • You must be at least 18 years old at the time of submission.
  • You may only submit one design of your own original creation. Please be aware of copyright infringement laws.
  • You cannot submit any form of AI generated images or art.
  • The logo must be submitted as a high resolution PNG file with the following naming convention: “Logo Submission_Last name, First Initial.” If the file is too large, please contact us and a link will be provided.
  • All entries must be submitted by May 5, 2025 at noon EST to be eligible. No submissions will be accepted after May 5th for any reasons.
  • Any entry deemed by Unity Health Toronto to be in violation of the Contest Rules of Guidelines, or otherwise considered inappropriate, will be disqualified in its sole and absolute discretion.
  • There is no entry fee.

Judging Criteria:

A working group will evaluate submissions based on creativity, originality, relevance, and the inclusion of diverse Indigenous cultures. All entries will be viewed by a panel of judges (our team, patients of Unity Health and technical experts in media design).

Criteria for Evaluation

Judges use the following criteria when evaluating the entries. It is not meant to be used as a strict rubric, but more of a guideline to critically evaluate and compare contest finalists. Individual evaluations shall not be provided to contestants.

  • Relevance: Does the design reflect themes of wellness, reconciliation and partnership?
  • Visibility & Cultural Inclusion: Does the design convey cultural values from all three identity groups (First Nations, Metis and Inuit)?
  • Versatility, Design & Colour: Consider if the design would work in various formats (i.e. as a watermark, print, digital, products, presentations, business cards, clothing and signage).
  • Concept: Does the design speak to important teachings? Does the artist explain the significance/impact on design choices?

Winning Logo Design:

  • One contestant will be awarded $3,000 by cheque.
  • May be shared with professional designers who may refine the design for use in print and digital media.
  • The (revised) design will be included on OIWRP materials, communications, social media and more.
  • You may be featured in Unity Health Toronto promotional materials, newsletters, and communication tools.
  • Deliverables:
    • High resolution PNG and EPS file

Timeline:

  • Logo contest released on Friday, April 4, 2025
  • Submissions due Monday, May 5, 2025 at noon EST
  • The winner will be contacted the week of May 26, 2025

Copyright

All contestants maintain all copyright and all other intellectual property rights to their logo.

All contestants hereby grant permission of Unity Health Toronto the right to share their logo with the Judging Panel for the purpose of this Contest and the right to store the work for submission management.

The Winning artist hereby grants Unity Health Toronto a non-exclusive, royalty free, irrevocable, worldwide, perpetual license to use, publish, modify, create derivative works, distribute and display the design and submission information, including your name and general location, for promotional and marketing purposes related to the contest; to promote and showcase the OIWRP website,  activities, locations, and to achieve its mission for the purposes of the Objectives identified above; for future branding, advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation.

Unity Health Toronto reserves the right to modify the Winning design to meet with the specs or modify or create derivatives, such as for a brand extension to Unity Health Toronto and OWIRP intellectual property portfolio, without additional consideration.

Contest Rules:

  1. Submission of an entry into this contest signifies you (i) have read, agreed, and have complied with the Contest Rules and Guidelines, (ii) declare you meet all criteria to enter this contest and, (iii) agree that the submission of an entry acts as a binding form of your electronic signature.
  2. If the content of your submission email contains language that attempts to remove, modify, reject, alter, or otherwise restrict the intended use of your design or these Rules and Guidelines, your submission will be rejected.
  3. In the event of a dispute or complaint regarding whether an entry contravenes the Contest Rules or Guidelines, you may be required to provide proof (in a form acceptable to Unity Health Toronto) that your entry should be deemed eligible. If Unity Health Toronto determines (at its sole discretion) that an entry contravenes the Contest Rules or Guidelines, the entry will be disqualified from the contest.
  4. The decisions of Unity Health Toronto and/or Judging Panel with respect to all aspects of this contest are final and binding on all entrants without right of appeal, including, without limitation, any decisions regarding the eligibility/ disqualification of entrants and/or entries.
  5. Unity Health Toronto reserves the right to terminate, suspend or modify the Contest at any time for any reason without any liability to any contestant.
  6. Unity Health Toronto assumes no liability for any loss, damage or injury, without limitation. If Unity Health Toronto is held liable its liability shall be capped in the aggregate to the value of the prize.
  7. Personal information collected at the point of entry is collected by the Unity Health Toronto and will be stored and used by the Unity Health Toronto and Judging Panel solely for the purposes of administering this contest, including being contacted as part of the Winning Announcement, as well as for any other purpose you may have opted into at the time of entry. By providing your personal information, you expressly consent to these terms.
  8. All contestants assume full responsibility for their entry and any consequences resulting from their participation in the contest.
  9. These terms and condition shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Ontario, Canada.
