Helping seniors cope during busy holidays

By Emily Dawson
While television advertisements sell the idea of joyful holidays for all, the truth is that this season can be highly stressful and lead to anxiety, worry and loneliness. Gillian Young, a social worker in Providence Healthcare’s Assess and Restore program, is helping patients stay healthy these holidays.
Ted is one of Young’s patients. “Worry has always been a part of me and I finally decided it was time to work on it,” said Ted. “Seeing Gillian is making a difference and I’m sharing my story so others know there’s help.”
Young asks Ted to schedule time for his worry. “Rather than letting worry stay with me all day, I focus on it for a set period of time. I feel more in control.”

Young also encourages Ted to stay connected. “My wife and I are organizing a neighbourhood party, especially for people who may be alone. We’re also hosting our family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There will be lots of noise and pandemonium, but it’ll help me feel the joy and fun of the season.”
If you or someone you know is feeling stressed or lonely, try these strategies during the holidays:
Countdown calendar
Young reminds patients that the holidays are a finite period. “In the midst of worry, it’s hard to remember the season will end. Sometimes people feel more in control if they physically mark off the days on a calendar, knowing things will return to normal soon.”
Care for yourself
“Pay attention to your feelings, and if you’re overwhelmed, try taking a walk or reading – something that comforts you,” said Young.
Honour those not with you
Young believes it’s important to remember loved ones not present. “Some people like to place an extra seat at the table or say a toast to them. It keeps them close in your heart.”
Find support
“Think about who you can reach out to if you feel lonely, or try calling the Toronto Seniors Helpline (416-217-2077) through WoodGreen Community Services,” said Young.
Providence’s Assess and Restore program can also help. You can refer yourself by calling 416-285-3744.
