July 24 is International Self-Care Day

Our network proudly joins the many individuals and organizations celebrating International Self-Care Day in an effort to recognize the importance of self-care, recovery and work-life balance. Since 2011, self-care activities formed in conjunction with International Self-Care Day have been organized around the world. The International Self-Care Foundation identifies the seven pillars of self-care as health literacy, mental well-being, physical activity, healthy eating, risk avoidance, good hygiene, and rational use of products and services.

“Self-care means taking small steps to live a healthy lifestyle every day. It’s not the avoidance of health conditions but rather about living well and feeling capable despite challenges,” says wellness coordinator Virona Ibrahim. She offers some tips for self-care:

  • Get More Sleep: Get at least seven hours of sleep every night — this is when our bodies regenerate, heal and detoxify. Missing out on a restful night can hurt job productivity, makes us eat larger portions, and may lead to diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
  • Eat more fruits and veggies: Following a good anti-inflammatory diet that includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables is an easy way to keep your body healthy and full of energy. Research shows that filling up on seven portions of fruits and veggies per day may make us happier.
  • Slow down your eating: Take at least 20 minutes to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner – it takes 20 minutes to feel full. In addition, try to take time away for your lunch and not eat at your desk or workstation.
  • Sneak in some exercise: It’s not always about going to the gym for an hour. Try parking further from the door or taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work.
  • Manage stress: Stress hormones affect our immunity in many ways. They suppress healthy digestion and may lead to “stress” eating. Find a stress-reliever that works for you. Importantly, if you are feeling uncomfortable or overwhelmed, reach out to people who can help.
  • Be Mindful: Give your body ten minutes of mindful attention. Use the body scan technique to check in with each part of your body.
  • Be Social: Develop and maintain strong relationships with the people who support you and enrich your life. Share, laugh, and enjoy life together. You can also join a club or a group. People who share common interests can help provide you with a sense of belonging.
  • Get outside: Getting some Vitamin D is a great way to improve yourmental and physical health. Research shows that spending time outdoor is associated with greater life satisfaction and less mental distress.
  • Sit less today: stand while working at your desk, pace during conference calls and walk at lunchtime. Or at least get up and stretch every hour.
