Earlier this year, we held our ‘Living our Values’ Awards, a recognition program for Providence staff, volunteers and physicians who have made outstanding contributions to Providence by living out our Values daily through their interactions with patients, residents, clients, community partners, families, visitors and each other. A committee of representatives from across the organization selects the recipients based on examples provided with the submission. Meet the first of our three recipients of this year’s awards.

Building Services Maintenance Staff Earl Regular is well known and loved in the Houses of Providence where he “carries on with staff and residents just like they were his own family, laughing with them and treating them with great respect.”

Embodying the Value of Compassionate Service, he understands the
importance of honouring residents in their home, even though it can take more time. One particular resident, new to the Houses, needed her room reconfigured to increase accessibility as she used a power wheelchair.

“She was not able to get into her closet to pick out her clothes or put her own laundry away, which was something that was important to her. Earl went to her room and totally re-arranged it. The resident was so happy; Earl had helped her feel at home.” Earl connects with people listening to their stories while sharing his own. “One resident beamed as he and Earl reminisced about their favourite Newfoundland dishes. The following Sunday, Earl drove from his home in Oshawa to the Houses to deliver a home cooked dish for the resident.” His compassion shines through not only forour residents but for our environment. “He is like our undercover inspector, identifying small issues and fixing them before they become a big problem.”

Earl is known as both “the most wanted man in the building” and “Mr. Fantastic” for his positive attitude and dependable service.
