St. Michael’s Hospital team performs world’s-first robotic-assisted neurovascular procedure remotely
In a world-first, a surgical team at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto has performed a robotic-assisted neurovascular diagnostic procedure remotely over a network connection—with the patient at St. Michael’s in the downtown core and the surgeon located at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, a community hospital six kilometres away.
Meet one of Unity Health Toronto’s Caring Hearts, Leading Minds: Tom Bradbury
Tom Bradbury remembers starting his job as a pot washer at Providence Healthcare in 1980, while still in high school. “I was feeling pretty nervous on my first day but I was also excited,” recalled Bradbury, who was just 17-years-old at the time. “It was my first job.”
How a team at St. Joseph’s Health Centre is changing the face of Emergency Care
St. Joseph’s Health Centre has changed a lot over the years. New clinics have opened, new wings have been built, an electronic patient record launched. Through it all the commitment has been the same: deliver the best care possible to patients in Toronto’s west end.
In the early 20th century, in the midst of the First World War, a physician at St. Michael’s Hospital did what had previously been unthinkable: he replenished an injured patient’s blood supply by transfusing them with blood from another person.
A national study led by St. Michael’s Hospital researcher found that 1 in 6 older adults suffer new disabilities – or even death – within six months after going through major surgery. This increased to 1 in 5 older adults after one year.
