Honouring the lives of 215 Indigenous children

Late last week, we heard of the horrifying discovery that 215 Indigenous children lay buried at a former residential school in British Columbia. This is devastating to all of us at Unity Health and undoubtedly has a particularly deep impact on Indigenous families and communities, Indigenous residential school survivors and their loved ones, and the Indigenous and settler populations of Canada more generally.
Our hearts go out to the families of those young children and to Indigenous colleagues who are grieving and mourning at this time.
Unity Health is honouring the lives and memories of those children by lowering flags at Unity Health sites.
We recognize that the Canadian residential school system has inflicted tragic devastation upon so many, and settlers on this country have a responsibility to do much more beyond flying our flags at half-mast. Unity Health remains committed to taking meaningful action towards anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination and being part of collective efforts to bring us closer to reconciliation.
