Nov. 14, 2019 – Perfectly timed with Research Month, Unity Health Toronto has been announced as one of the top 15 research hospitals in Canada, and in the top five of Canada’s medium-sized hospitals in researcher intensity, according to a list published today by Research Infosource Inc.

In the list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, Unity Health has climbed to number 11. Ranked previously as only the St. Michael’s Hospital site, Unity Health moved up one spot from last year’s number 12 ranking.

“I’m so pleased about the wonderful news that our research enterprise at Unity Health has moved up in rank in Canada in November, which for us is Research Month,” said Dr. Ori Rotstein, vice-president of Research and Innovation at Unity Health.

Research Infosource further broke down its analysis by zeroing in on “Researcher Intensity,” a list that shows research spending by researcher. Among medium-sized hospitals, Unity Health maintained its ranking from last year at fifth for researcher intensity.

“Our research changes lives and we are excited by our continued success and growth as an institute,” Dr. Rotstein said. “This is a testament to the hard work from our whole team in Research and Innovation and I thank each of our team members for your contribution to our impactful research.”

This list publishes annually and captures research spending based on a survey of research hospitals and from financial statements. The spending includes all funds (direct and indirect) spent on all sources (internal and external) to support research. Researchers included are full and part-time researchers, scientists, investigators and/or clinician-researchers with a faculty appointment who actively conduct research. Ontario’s information is co-ordinated in collaboration with the Council of Academic Hospitals in Ontario (CAHO).
