Perfectly timed with Research Month, St. Michael’s Hospital has been announced as one of the top 15 research hospitals in Canada, and in the top five of Canada’s medium-sized hospitals in researcher intensity, according to a list published today by Research Infosource Inc.
In the list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, St. Michael’s maintained its spot from 2017, at number 12. Research Infosource further broke down its analysis by zeroing in on ‘Researcher Intensity,’ a list that shows research spending by researcher, or researcher intensity. In the medium-sized hospitals, St. Michael’s comes in fifth for researcher intensity.
This list publishes annually and captures research spending based on a survey of research hospitals and from financial statements. The spending includes all funds (direct and indirect) spent on all sources (internal and external) to support research. Researchers included are full and part-time researchers, scientists, investigators and/or clinician-researchers with a faculty appointment who actively conduct research. Ontario’s information is coordinated in collaboration with the Council of Academic Hospitals in Ontario (CAHO).
“We are excited to maintain our spot in the top 15 research hospitals in Canada, and to be listed in the top five medium-sized hospitals,” said Dr. Pat O’Campo, interim vice president of Research at St. Michael’s. “It’s another testament to the impact of research at St. Michael’s.”
Overall, research spending at Canada’s leading research hospitals, hospital networks and health authorities rose by 4.1% to $2.65 billion in Fiscal 2017, according to Research Infosource Inc.
Research Infosource will also announce Canada’s Innovation Leaders on Nov. 15, 2018, which will celebrate Canada’s leading research universities, companies, hospitals and colleges, with a special focus this year on intellectual property.
