Centre for Faculty Development (CFD)

Participants will expand their thinking about learning conversations and provide useful frameworks and tools that they can immediately apply to their teaching in simulation or clinical environments.

Preceptor Education Program (PEP)

  • Sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Health, Council of Ontario Universities, Western University & others
  • Eight interactive e-learning modules
  • Each module takes 30-45 minutes to complete.
  • The modules include downloadable resources, learning exercises, video case scenarios and references. Learning is self-directed.

Teaching and Learning in the Clinical Context (TLC)

Centre for Faculty Development (CFD)

  • Virtual 12-week program. This course is for clinical teachers from all professions
  • Both self-paced & self-directed eLearning modules and facilitated group learning.
  • Develop the foundational knowledge and skills needed to teach in the clinical context.
  • Recognize how to be adaptive clinical teachers, responsive to unique contextual and learner needs.

Developing Skills as a Mentor

Centre for Faculty Development (CFD)

This workshop describes elements of effective mentoring relationships and some of the skills that are required to establish and maintain mentoring relationships. Participants review their role in the promotion of mentoring ‘culture’ in their organization.

Introduction to the coaching approach

Introduction to the coaching approach and provided with practical tools and opportunities to practice coaching conversations.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the key attributes of a coaching approach
  • Explore the optimal mindset for coaching
  • Practice using a conversation tool and model while building your core coaching skills

Interprofessional Preceptorship Workshop

As preceptors, nurses and health discipline clinicians support the transition and integration of new healthcare professionals and learners into the organization and practice setting. They support the development of clinical competence and confidence, through the sharing of knowledge and skills, while acting as role models, teachers and coaches. Evidence reveals that when clinicians take on the role of preceptors, the entire organization and profession benefits. This workshop will equip nurses and health discipline clinicians with the knowledge and skills necessary for them to function effectively in a preceptor role.

Nursing Preceptor Workshop (Nursing Professional Practice)

This workshop will prepare nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary for them to function effectively in a preceptor role.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the components and benefits of nursing preceptorship programs
  • Identify adult learning principles and learning style preferences
  • Apply tools and techniques to foster critical thinking in the preceptee
  • Apply tools and techniques to provide timely and effective feedback
  • Understand barriers to effective communication and apply conflict management strategies
  • Understand the importance and elements of evaluation for the preceptee and preceptor
  • Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the preceptor, preceptee, and the educator/administrator

Supporting Learners Who Witness and Experience Mistreatment

Centre for Faculty Development (CFD)

Highly interactive workshop will provide an overview of the role, scope, strategies and resources faculty/preceptors/supervisors should consider in order to support learners who witness or experience mistreatment.

Teaching for Collaborative Learning – Practice Settings

This workshop is an introduction to collaborative learning. It introduces participants to the evidence, best practices and principles for teaching collaboratively. Participants will have the opportunity to develop a mini workshop and practice collaborative learning facilitation in the virtual setting.

Teaching Fundamentals: Clinical Context

Centre for Faculty Development (CFD)

  • Workshop for those who teach in the clinical setting.
  • Introduces key strategies related to teaching in the clinical setting. Participants will learn how to apply strategies to enhance the educational climate and compare/contrast different preceptorship models.

Centralized Education Fund (CEF)

Unity Health Toronto is committed to investing in education and training opportunities for its staff. Employees have access to education funds through a centralized process that allows Unity Health Toronto to optimize the allocated funds and ensure a transparent process and equitable access for all staff. The Centralized Education Funds (CEF) provide monetary assistance to support employees’ professional development through participation in learning events such as courses, workshops, webinars and/or conferences. When appropriate, monetary support is also provided to support travel and accommodation expenses.

This preceptor guide is designed to give quick and easy resources to preceptors, regardless of where they are in their teaching journey. It offers resources along a continuum from setting the stage for successful preceptorship, detecting challenging preceptor situations, and managing challenging situations. Resources are a mix of quick guides and more comprehensive readings and teachings.

Preceptor/Student Checklist

The following checklists are resources to help both preceptors and learners maximize the quality of the educational experience. These checklists are a guide and can be adapted. There are three (3) different checklists that will help preceptors and learners prepare for placements; pre -placement, at the beginning of placement and at the end of placement.
