General Surgery

General Surgery is a specialty that uses surgery to manage diseases of the abdomen, digestive organs, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, breast, endocrine organs, and head and neck. Our team of fellowship-trained surgeons offer extensive expertise in advanced minimally invasive techniques and use state of the art evidence to guide care.

The Division of General Surgery at St. Joseph’s Health Centre is an integral part of the University of Toronto division of General Surgery offering fellowship and residency training to the next generation of surgeons.

Our specialized programs include:

Hepatobiliary – We are a designated Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) regional care centre for the surgical treatment for the following malignant diseases: Pancreatic cancer, Liver cancer, Bile duct cancer, Gastric cancer. Please visit our website at stjoeshpb.ca for more information.

Colorectal disease – We offer comprehensive care including colon cancer screening and surgical management of colon cancer. We provide management of perianal disease.

Bariatric surgery – We offer comprehensive care for obesity through the Ontario Bariatric Network, an OHIP funded provincial program. Our bariatric surgeons are on call for bariatric surgical emergencies.

General surgery – Our surgical group offers care of hernias, thyroid and parathyroid disease, and management of gallbladder disease.

Emergency care – We have a dedicated team of Acute Care Surgeons who provide high quality and timely care to all patients presenting through our emergency room with urgent general surgery problems.
