Dr. Mary-Anne Aarts graduated from Queen’s University Faculty of Medicine in 1998. She completed general surgery residency training and obtained a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto. She went on to obtain specialty fellowship training in Bariatric & Minimally Invasive Surgery and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Aarts took on the role of Chief of Surgery and Co-medical Director of the Perioperative program at St Joseph’s Health Centre in 2021. Prior to this, she worked at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto as a staff surgeon for many years. Her surgical practice is focused on laparoscopic bariatric, gastro-intestinal, and hernia surgery. She brings a minimally invasive approach to all of her care.
Her research has focused on Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS), and applying best practices at a system level. She is very interested in access to surgical care and minimizing waste and the carbon footprint in the operating room.
