Biography

Dr. Jayaraman completed his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Ottawa in 1998 and medical school at Western University in 2002. He completed his General Surgery Residency at The University of Western Ontario and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 2007. He then stayed in London where he completed a Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Fellowship as well as a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2009. The focus of his thesis was the design and evaluation of novel instruments for Minimally Invasive Surgery and surgical education. In 2010 he completed a fellowship in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Dr. Jayaraman’s main clinical interests are Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgical Oncology, intra-abdominal malignancies, and the application of advanced minimally invasive surgical approaches to diseases of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tract. In addition to clinical research related to his surgical practice, Dr. Jayaraman’s main academic interest is the advancement of surgical technique with the aid of novel technologies. He has expertise in image-guided surgery and the design and evaluation of novel surgical instruments. He also has an interest in the improvement of surgical education, safe cholecystectomy and bile duct injury management and prevention, surgical coaching and peer-mentoring.

Dr. Jayaraman is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, the Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Toronto, as well as the Fellowship Director the St. Joseph’s Health Centre-Unity Health Toronto HPB Fellowship Program. Dr. Jayaraman is also the President-Elect of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, the past President of the Canadian Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (CHBPA), and Co-Chair of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Safe Cholecystectomy Taskforce. He also serves as the Chair of Unity Health Toronto Gastrointestinal Tumour Boards.
