Sheila Brazel
Dr. Sheila Brazel is a well-known and respected surgeon/clinician in the St. Joseph’s community. She has been on staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre as a cataract and glaucoma surgeon since 1996 – she has performed more than 20,000 surgeries.
She is a lecturer in the University of Toronto in the Department of Vision Sciences (DOVS) and is involved in teaching clinical ophthalmology to both family practice residents and undergraduate medical students. Dr Brazel is past head of Ophthalmology at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, having served in that role for 13 years. As head of the department, she oversaw the growth of a team of multi-disciplinary ophthalmic specialists and the development of a highly respected state-of-the-art teaching clinic and operating Facility.
Dr. Brazel began her studies as an undergraduate at the University of Waterloo. She completed medical school and ophthalmology residency training at the University of Toronto. Her postgraduate training included the completion of a Fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Additional postgraduate fellowship training in glaucoma was completed at the University Health Network, University of Toronto.
She is an active member of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, The Canadian Glaucoma Society, The Canadian Medical Association, and The American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr Brazel’s current practice includes comprehensive medical and surgical ophthalmology as well as specialized glaucoma care. She is currently accepting new surgical referrals.
