
David Szalay
Dr. David Szalay is a Vascular Surgeon and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery. He is graduate of the Temerty School of Medicine (MD) and Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (Masters in Education) at the University of Toronto. He began his career at St. Joseph’s Health Centre Toronto then joined the Department of Surgery at McMaster University as an Associate Professor where he served in various academic and clinical leadership positions including Academic Program Director, Academic Division Head and Clinical Service Leads for Vascular Surgery at Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant (HNHB) LHIN. He returned to Toronto in May 2023 to join the Division of Vascular Surgery at St. Michael’s.
Dr. Szalay is very active in medical / surgical education and quality improvement with numerous past and current roles at a local, provincial and national level including many years as an examiner and member of the Specialty Committee in Vascular Surgery with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and as a Surgeon Champion for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). He has held discipline leadership responsibilities such as Chair of the Section for Vascular Surgery with the Ontario Medical Association, and more than a decade on the provincial (CorHealth) Advisory Committee for Vascular Surgery. His academic interests focus on surgical education, practice change, and participation / collaboration in clinical research trials in vascular surgery and vascular medicine. He was the project lead and first author for the most recent Canadian practice guidelines for the management of chronic venous disease and co-author for the Canadian best practice guidelines for peripheral arterial disease (2022).
