Caring Hearts, Leading Minds: Niala Dookie, Activation Assistant at The Houses of Providence
Whether she’s applying nail polish, calling out bingo numbers, or just chatting about the latest Blue Jays game, activation assistant Niala Dookie thrives on making personal connections with the residents at The Houses of Providence.
At a small table in one of the activity rooms, Dookie expertly applies a coat of ruby-red nail polish for a resident, while another waits patiently for one of her signature hand massages.

“Sometimes I have quite a line-up,” she laughs, as she gently begins rubbing lotion into the resident’s palms and forearms. Her famous massages and cheerful demeanor have made Dookie a favourite among those who call The Houses of Providence home.
The Houses of Providence is a long-term care centre serving 288 residents located on the campus of Providence Healthcare, a regional leader for rehabilitation, seniors and long-term care where specialized teams help people live to their fullest potential.

Working as an activation assistant for the past five years, Dookie plans and runs a wide range of recreational programs including arts and crafts, music, games, gardening, and social gatherings. Each activity is carefully tailored to the interests and abilities of the residents while supporting their physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being.
She also leads several key events, including the annual Mother’s Day Bazaar and cultural celebrations such as Diwali and Black History Month. A passionate Blue Jays fan, Dookie organizes a yearly outing to Rogers Centre so residents can cheer on their Blue Jays in person.

“The best part of my job is the residents,” she says. “Helping them participate in programs, meet their needs, and knowing I’ve made a difference for them and their families—that’s what keeps me going.”
