Austin Pereira

Dr. Austin Pereira is a medical retina and uveitis specialist, as well as cataract surgeon, affiliated with the University of Toronto. As a fellowship-trained medical retina and ocular inflammation specialist, Dr. Pereira offers a unique practice encompassing surgical management of complex cataracts, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of rare retinal and posterior uveitis disease entities.

Dr. Pereira completed his medical training at the University of Toronto, where he was awarded the Golden Stethoscope Award as one of the top clinical clerks, as well as the Dr. Mark Cohen Ophthalmology Award given to the graduating student showing special promise in becoming an outstanding clinician. While in medical school, Dr. Pereira completed a Master’s of Engineering degree at the University of Toronto Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, where he developed skills in bringing innovative surgical devices and medications to life.

Dr. Pereira continued his residency training at the University of Toronto. Over five years, he mastered his craft in completing cataract surgeries requiring complex anterior segment approaches, as well as cultivating his passion for retina and ocular inflammation. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Duncan Jamieson Memorial Prize and Woywitka Cup Award, which is given to the Ophthalmology resident with the highest academic standing over five years of residency training. Following residency, Dr. Pereira completed the prestigious Medical Retina and Uveitis Fellowship at the University of Toronto, where he cultivated his skills in diagnosing and treating rare, complex retinal and posterior uveitis pathology. During his fellowship, Dr. Pereira was named the Chief Fellow at the University of Toronto.

Beyond his training, Dr. Pereira is passionate about medical education for his peers and learners worldwide. He was awarded the illustrious PARO Resident Teaching Award, given to the resident physician who provides outstanding clinical training to their junior residents and medical students. He also is the co-founder of OCTcases.com, a worldwide training tool for ophthalmology trainees to practice their skills in interpreting optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. This training tool has been awarded multiple grants and awards worldwide. Dr. Pereira has also published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and has an active role in numerous multi-centre clinical trials.

Dr. Pereira brings a fresh perspective to the full array of macular and peripheral retinal pathology. He also strives to tackle the most complex cataract surgeries and provide quality vision for all his patients. As an avid sportsman, he brings an energetic enthusiasm to the clinical space and thrives in a team-based setting. He is thrilled to be providing high-quality care to the community where he was born and raised.
